Heart in their Hand Project for bereaved families

"You may hold my hand for a moment, but you'll hold my heart forever"

When my little Adam was stillborn at 31wks, one of the worst things we had to do was leave the hospital empty handed.

The worst was saying goodbye.

It was devastating and something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy and it was only in the coming months and years that I realised the true impact our loss would have on us and our family.

I used to make wedding tiaras, something I loved but when Adam died everything changed. Over time I directed my jewellery towards personalised items for families that have lost their precious baby and launched Angel of Mine Jewellery in 2013. There is something about being able to wear an item of jewellery on you every day and close to your heart that helps them feel close by.

But I wanted to create something that could be linked to baby in a more tangible way and came up with the concept of the heart in their hand project. The little keepsake heart that is cut out of the keyring can be placed in the hand or blanket of baby when saying goodbye and the keyring goes home with the parents, to mark the special connection between parents and baby.

The project gives parents the chance to buy the keyring gifts and donate them to their local hospital, as a special gesture from one bereaved family to another. I would have LOVED to have had something like this when my Adam died.  This has made me want to pay it forward to parents so they can have this special keepsake and be touched by the gesture ~ especially if it has come from another family who have been touched by such a loss too. It is our hope that the project will spread, reaching lots of families and offering a small piece of comfort at such a devastating time. The project will also be supporting the Research & Prevention fund at Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity) by donating 50p from every keyring, to help prevent the loss of babies lives.
